Quaking Aspen (Popple)

The Aspen is the most widley distributed tree in Michigan and North America. Named after it's leaves, which catch gentle breezes and quake or shake in the wind. Grows in large, oftern pure stands. Once cut will produce clone trees from it's roots.  The  Young quaking aspen provides food and habitat for a variety of wildlife; black bear, deer, beaver, porcupine, elk, moose, ruffed grouse and others. Habitat for growth is wet or dry, sandy or rocky soils.

The wood of the Aspen is used in packaging, economical furniture, pallets,  stuffing, animal bedding and more.  This is a softer, light-colored, even-grained hardwood belonging to the Populous family. Unfinished, aspen appears to have little or no grain, but the natural grain appears after the stain has been applied. Aspen can be finished to resemble cherry, walnut, and other more expensive hardwoods. It accepts most stains well, but may need a sealer to achieve an even coloring.
